RIP Byron Donzis, flak-jacket inventor

    I remember reading in SI when I was a kid the anecdote that serves as the lead of the above story.

    Dan Pastorini had suffered a couple of cracked ribs and was in the hospital room when Donzis and an associate were able to sneak into his room. Wearing a trenchcoat, Donzis had his confidante whack him in the ribs with a baseball bat and he didn't even flinch; he then revealed to Pastorini the flak jacket he was wearing. Pastorini was fitted for the jacket and wore it during the Oilers' march to the AFC Championship game.

    The story above is a well-done obit about a guy with a lot of interesting ideas.
