Character actor with more credits to his name than I think I can do justice citing.

He was good in everything he did. My first thought of him was as the sheriff in First Blood.

Damn! I'm not sure I saw him in a role I disliked.

Dead at 81. I had no idea he was that old.

Well, I first saw him in "Looking for Mr.Goodbar", with Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, and that was in '77. First time Gere got national notice as well.

Can't get any farther without mentioning he played Bobby Knight in that ESPN telepic. And the dad in "Tommy Boy."

It's kind of funny, the first thing I remember him in was this TV show called "Big Shamus, Little Shamus" about a cop or PI who was a single father to a preteen kid (played by Doug McKeon). I was like 10 years old and saw the first two episodes, and that ended up being the series. I guess the ratings were so bad, the network immediately yanked it. To be truthful, it was probably really bad. I do remember they had the kid doing a crying scene at least once each episode; that was probably going to get old real quick.

Anyway, RIP to a really talented actor.

Patton Oswalt tells a story about meeting Dennehy at a buffet line. Dennehy must've been loading up his plate, because he told Oswalt. "Character actors! Who cares if we get fat."
