I like to think there is an alternate reality where Dierker and Don Wilson never got injured, and the Astros never made some bad trades and personnel decisions so their 1970s lineup would have included Cedeno, Watson, Howe, Morgan, Staub, Colbert, Wynn and Geronimo. That would have been a damn hard team to beat. Note: yes, that is too many first basemen and outfielders for them all to succeed. Second note: how does one scouting department come up with two different star center fielders named Cesar at the same time.

Watson reminds me of Mike Torrez, a guy who seemed to be in the middle of everything big (and with several different teams) in the mid to late 1970s.

Their scouting department should be hailed for that.

I was wondering if Chip Hale was their scouting director.

Bob Watson was a very serious person for a baseball player of that time. He took finance courses during the season- he wanted a life after baseball.

    He quit over Steinbrenner's meddling.
