    He was seventh on the career list of PGA Tour victories, and among those were three majors, including one of the most stunning of all time, coming from seven behind with nine holes to go to catch Arnold Palmer at the 1966 U.S. Open, then winning an 18-hole playoff the next day. He conceded he told Palmer during the final round that he was trying to hold on and finish second, with Palmer responding, "I'll do everything I can to help you," or words to that effect.
