    Definitely someone with good ideas.

Occasionally his statements about shunning absolutes could be problematic, at least when dealing with people looking for a way to avoid certain guidelines.

Alas, places have decided they no longer need this sort of pesky editing.

Loved — and still refer to — his 2000 book, "Lapsing Into a Comma." It's a superb secondary reference, after the AP Stylebook, if you're into that sort of thing. (And I am.)

Loved his book "Lapsing into a Comma" and his "The Slot" blog on copy editing. RIP Bill

The "places" might have decided they no longer need this "pesky" editing, but for some of us, it's what separates being a publication of record from a throwaway shopper. RIP to a man with solid-gold standards.

I thought the 49ers coach had died again when I first saw this.
