Former NASCAR champion Benny Parsons dies
    DAVID POOLE

Benny Parsons, whose gentle nature made him a favorite among NASCAR fans as a broadcaster and whose competitive fire drove him from his father’s taxi company in Detroit to the championship in stock-car racing’s top division, died early Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Sad. Not a big fan of NASCAR, but his voice was recognizable, his knowledge was superior. He will be missed.

Just saw the news on Cold Pizza. This really sucks. Benny was one of the good guys in NASCAR. They will no doubt do a tribute to him at Daytona when the racing season starts. He helped NASCAR become a household name.

    Damn this sucks.

RIP. Races on TV were so much better with him behind the mike.

He was great as an announcer and had so much passion for the sport. He'll definitely be missed. RIP.

He was such a great personality on TV. First Bobby Hamilton, now Benny Parsons. RIP.

I feel terrible for the family.

Benny's son, Keith Parsons, is the former AP sports writer who was based most recently in Raleigh. My thoughts are with Keith today.
