Wife looooves Golden Girls. Has it on DVD.

Personally, can't stand it -- but I do remember the All in the Family episode with "Maude is here!"

Agree with those who say she had a great sense of timing.

I had forgotten that Maude was an All In The Family spinoff. Norman Lear had quite the Midas touch back in the day.

Amazing that Bea Arthur didn't become a star until well after age 50. Unheard-of for actresses of any era.

Great point. That just doesn't happen.

From History of the World, Part 1:
    Dole Office Clerk (B.A.): Occupation?
    Comicus (Mel Brooks): Stand-up philosopher.
    Dole Office Clerk: What?
Comicus: Stand-up philosopher. I coalesce the vapors of human experience into a viable and meaningful comprehension.
Dole Office Clerk: Oh, a bullshit artist.

Could you also say the same about Estelle Getty?

She was already a huge Broadway star at the time though. It's not like she just walked in off the street, ya know.

    Sirs, Madames,

Maude was one of my favorites.

I found the Walter's-vasectomy-after-golf episode so funny I planned on doing it--rained that day.

It wasn't until I took a train from Tarrytown to Grand Central a couple of years ago that I realized Tuckahoe was a real town.

Hermoine Baddeley reminded me of my mother--same accent/attitude, sans Mrs Naugatuck's drinking.

And Femputor, of course. I listed "Death ... by Snu Snu" on my favorite quotations on Facebook.

Yeah, she'd already won a Tony Award in 1966 for Mame (opposite Lucille Ball). She started doing theater in the 40s when she was in her mid-20s.

I forget which Comedy Central roast it was, probably the Pamela Anderson one...

"I wouldn't fuck her with Bea Arthur's dick." Jeff Ross (I think...)

    RIP to a true talent.

C'mon, Faithless. If Moddy forced us to be respectful to Bob Jelenic, one of the sorriest excuses for a human being there was, when he died, the least you can do is not make fun of Bea Arthur until they put her in the ground.
