Barry was the first big-city SE to give me an interview. This was 1982 and I was in Phoenix on vacation. I hadn't even sent a resume, just called him and he said sure, come on in. And he had no openings. RIP, Barry.

I would be remiss not to pay my respects: Barry gave me my first job as a clerk at the Republic and allowed me to write for the zones. He then let me cover Northern Arizona while going to college there for three years -- and work on the copy desk during the summers. Who cared about grades, he let me learn on the job. He was a gruff man with a big heart to whom I will always be grateful.
