RIP Al Kaline

    Yeah, but I'm just thinking they could have done some sort of play on words with his name.

    I think Kaline himself was not into self promotion, certainly not making a goofy pun out of his name.
    And I don't think he had a high enough profile nationwide to really carry ad campaigns. The Tigers were also rans most of the 50s although they did jump into contention in 1961.
    As many stories pointed out, Kaline had a HOF caliber season at age 22, then spent most of the rest of his career at "only" an all-star level.

    I do recall some old pals of Kaline sometimes called him "Salt," a pun for high school chemistry students everywhere. I don't think Al was particularly wild about it.
