Turn on your radio, if you're that "concerned" about it.

Sally Ride publicly coming out as gay would have been news at any point in the past 33 years. She had to die for that to happen. I'm not going to pick a fight on this one.

Does it have an effect on what she did in life? No. Does it have an effect on her long-time partner? Yes. If her partner was male, he would be entitled to the benefits she receives for her federal service. Because she's female, she's not.

That's why it's news. It's news because someone rightly hailed as a pioneering figure in American history is discriminated against, even after death, based purely on her sexuality.

Neil Armstrong's wife will receive federal benefits if he goes before her. Why doesn't Sally Ride, every bit the pioneer that Neil Armstrong was, deserve the same treatment?

"The extra note in this case is that many people who would otherwise praise Sally Ride and thank for her service and inspiration are now apt to think she is not fit to serve or inspire."

OR...hopefully it may cause some of those people to soften their opinion on the issue.

So, I can safely assume you won't be backing up your claims?

If "right wingers" are so predictable, and so hateful, can we please just be a little patient, and wait for one of them to say something like this? Then we can all rightly criticize him or her.

Instead, folks want to prop up straw men, and bat them down. That's easy, but what's the evidence people are even thinking along these lines?

The claim was that it was, "new information readers find interesting," and that made it news.

But, clearly, it's not news, if it's only news when self disclosed, so please don't cite the "reader's interest".

But, let's set that aside for a moment. Are the readers interested?

Sally Ride has been a public figure for 30 years. Has the public ever clamored for more information about her private life? Has their ever been a demand to know who her parker was, or what her sexual orientation was?

Even with this announcement, how did the public express it's interest?

And, lastly, in the "additional articles" that led with her sexuality, did any of them include original reporting that went beyond the statement released by her family, or the statement made by her sister?

Did these articles give us a fuller picture of Sally Ride, or did they just draw attention to this one fact about her, while adding nothing?

Moat people did not know Sally Ride had pancreatic cancer. Did any of the news orgs who wrote about her sexuality also write a sidebar about pancreatic cancer? That was "news". Or was it not interesting enough?

Your concern is noted. You are probably also wondering why she didn't campaign in North Carolina.

Not until you broached it on this thread.
