    C'ville being a quick ride down 64 is nice.

    Richmond is also the only major city with river rapids running through it if you like the water stuff and kayaking.

    You have a medicore amusement park (Kings Dominion) about 20 minutes up the road, so if you have kids you could do water, amusement park, historical in a nice three-day spell.

    Richmond also has some very, very good mom and pop places to eat ranging from Italian to Cuban.

    If this is a weekend thing from the Northeast, I strongly suggest taking the train into Richmond and renting a car.

    Either that or become familiar with Route 301.

    Being a Devils fan, too, I'd jump at the chance to do this if I wasn't living on the west coast!

    Being as the trip is far enough into the future and the reviews have been less than kind, I'll adjust the title and see what kind of information I get...

    So, Richmond, Virginia it is! What does this city have?

    Jet down to (colonial) Williamsburg and Yorktown. See the battlefield (way cool, IMO), then drive into town and check out the riverfront. Not a ton, there, but a few little shops and a little bar with pretty good food.

    Williamsburg is pretty cool for history buffs, too. A little touristy, yes, but everyone needs to see it once, I guess. Plenty of shopping and food, there.

    It's a relatively quick trip down 64.

    I'd also defer to Moddy, as it's been many years since I spent real time in Richmond, but ... if you're into history:

    * Museum of the Confederacy
    * Hollywood Cemetary
    * The state capitol building is beautiful
    * The Crater in Petersburg; the self-guided tour at Cold Harbor battlefield
    * Not sure on specific places to eat, but downtown in the Slip there are tons of restaurants, etc. I'd recommend the Strawberry Street Cafe, on Strawberry Street in the Fan.
    * Maymont Park is a great place for a picnic.
    * Cruise Monument Avenue and check out the statues (second-place trophies). They are impressive.
    * It's not that far to Monticello. Montpelier, the home of James Madison, is nearby and also worth a look.
    * Colonial Williamsburg and the Yorktown battlefield.
    * Spotsylvania isn't all that far away. Parts of that battlefield are very well preserved, and parts of the Fredricksburg battlefield are also well-preserved.
    * There's also one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country in Richmond. And it ain't VCU. ;D

    Pastor,

    Williamsburg IS a little touristy, but there's a GREAT outlet mall there (including a Coach shop that kept me outfitted when I lived in Richmond). If the wife (or you) like shopping, hit it up.

    Also, the best "going out drinking" recommendation I can give you is the Capital Ale House. There's one out on the West End with a larger draft selection, but the one downtown has live music. I preferred West End because live music does nothing for me. Go to their site and look at the ale/lager menu. It rotates weekly. Also, get a Bavarian pretzel. Trust me on this.

    As for mom-and-pop eateries, 93D is correct. My favorite was a place called Mary Angela's down in Carytown. Huge slices, massive sandwiches, all super affordable. I used to get a slice of pizza and the kid's ravioli and be unable to finish it.

    Other options: Louisiana Flair (Beignet Day every Wednesday from the time they open till they run out. Generally gone by 10 a.m. GREAT Po' Boys, and it's out the back door of the T-D. 4th and Grace), Tarrant's (used to be a drugstore, now a great restaurant with some really good food. A little pricier, but definitely affordable. http://www.tarrantscafe.org/).

    For shopping, if you or the wife like boutiques, Carytown is the place for you. Lots of great little shops (though some have closed, apparently, since I was last there). Check out a store called "Mongrel." Moddy introduced me to it, and it has fantastic little knicknacks from cards to drinking supplies to magnets to decorations. Good stuff. http://www.mongrelonline.com/

    Oh, and everything micro said. The UR campus is freaking gorgeous.

    You must go to the Maymont if you visit Richmond.

    Especially if you have kids.

    Plus, it's free.

    I would check out what is going on festival-wise when you visit. For example, the Watermelon Festival is always a good time.

    IJAG might be better at giving you heads up on those.
