Well, the novelist Tom Robbins (a former copy editor in Richmond) wrote in one of his 1970s novels that in South Richmond the men know more about the carburetor than the clitoris. I don't remember which novel it was from, don't remember anything else from his novels that I read back then, but I'll never forget that line.

The Tom Robbins novel was Even Cowgirls Get The Blues.

Yes. Great book. I'm trying to wade my way through Jitterbug Perfume by Robbins right now, and it's a challenge. Which is fine with me. Good to challenge the mind every once in a while. Sorry to derail the topic, but Robbins kicks ass. Carry on.

    Frank,

If you ever visited some parts of Chesterfield County during the era he lived there, you'd know Tom Robbins wasn't too far off the mark. There's been a ton of upscale suburban growth in the Midlothian/west county area, which is now subdivision city, but as has been said, the Powite Parkway, which splits the county, was aptly named.

Southside used to smell like one big cigarette, thanks to the huge Reynolds tobacco plants there.

The entire area has changed. White flight has made places such as Midlothian prosper.

    One done.

Steve Trosky, currently the sports editor at the Lynchburg News and Advance, will join our staff on June 11 as deputy sports editor-content.

He's been at Lynchburg three years and has done one hell of a job turning that section into an award winner. He was as close to a perfect fit for this job as you'll find.

Still working on preps and my other deputy (design/editing). I'm very glad to have one more done, though, particularly considering the quality of the candidate we hired.

    Onward.

(and, no, I don't know what Lynchburg will do but I can make a strong guess that it will hire a replacement. I'd recommend the job because it is a good area and Steve is leaving the section in excellent shape. It is not a rebuilding job.)

Trosky's a pretty good guy -- nothing much of a bowler, though.
Congrats to Steve, and Mike, congrats on having one of the hires made.

I've not dealt with Steve a whole lot, just a handful of times, but I've found him to be very knowledgeable and very helpful.

    Congrats, Steve.

On the contrary, he probably should have learned to fold the 2-5 off suit.

My dealings with Steve have been fairly limited, but he seems like a good guy and the section in Lynchburg is probably as strong as it's ever been, at least in recent memory. So excelsior to him.

Thanks MU, Hustle and Meat (sounds like the title of a porn movie). And thank you for the kind words, Mike.

And MU? I've got a buck that says you can't beat your local college basketball trainer in bowling. And it was 2-7 off suit. I'm all in.

On a more serious note, I imagine the sports editor's position in Lynchburg will be posted by the end of the week, so anyone interested should keep their eyes open. We have an excellent staff and that is why our section has improved quite a bit. One of the keys in the management business is to surround yourself with good people and let them do their thing. I've been fortunate to work with some great writers and designers and they have carried the load. They deserve all of the accolades. I know this is a shameless plug for the N&A, and it doesn't really belong on this thread, so I apologize. But I really hope that a lot of good candidates apply for this position because it's an excellent gig, especially for somebody who is looking to move up. If you have questions, feel free to contact me.

As a side note, yes, I am still in the process of interviewing designers for an opening, and I hope to have that completed before I leave.

    Now, back to relative obscurity.

Anyone have any updates on the prep reporter position that's open? (And yes I know, I'm hired)
