Reporter arrested

You would figure someone with some rank would realize the arresting a reporter wouldn't help anything and put the kabosh on the arrest - unless it was the supervisor that wanted it to go down.

You mean the main story or the arrest story.

He got out of jail and wrote the main story.

Ethically, he cannot write the arrest story. I bet the editor did.

Cubbie: I was referring to this:

"In this story I am betting the reporter had been around for awhile and had pushed the line a couple times. A cop got sick of it and made an unlawful arrest. That is my guess at least."

    Now, perhaps I mis-read "around a while."

I thought you meant he was an experienced reporter who had clashed with police in the past.

    Hence my commentary.

On re-reading, you may be referring to the specific day. But he had *not* been around long that day.

The deputies tend to act on their own a lot, because they are used to be out in the ass-end of the county alone.

That was not the case here, but I am unsure if supervisors were around.

Sounds like some power hungry cop being a dick. Unfortunate.

I think being a belligerent, entitled asshole falls under "pushing the cop's buttons."

I was just talking about that day. From being in similar situations I assume he showed up walked as far as he could and started asking questions. The cop in that area didn't like and told him to move back. There was no police tape and it was a public area so as a good reporter should do he refused. After awhile the cop got fed up and arrested him.

I've read of similar instances and came close to it myself once.

If the paper just printed puppy dog stories, this wouldn't happen.

I know this space loves to kill reader comments.
Did you guys look at the editor's blog responders? Incredibly well-reasoned arguments and valid points made on each side of issue.*

Sort of unrelated, but the editor is a former sports editor.

They put out a great sports section, and that's one of the reasons.
