Reporter accused of porn for filming clothed cheerleaders

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Write-brained, Mar 31, 2008.

  1. I just heard about this today. It's a couple of weeks old, so I imagine it's a d_b but I couldn't find it.

Still, this is something we should be talking about since it's involving a reporter taking pictures of clothed cheerleaders. Bizarre case

It may be sleazy, but how the hell do you arrest the guy for taking pictures of a public competition and accuse him of porn?

    Terrible reporting.

    What was obscene?

How was he using the cheerleader footage?

  4. I have zero tolerance for child pornography.
However, I can't see how filming a youth cheerleading competition would count.
I wouldn't do it, and I doubt I'd be happy about it if I saw someone filming my daughter doing a competition in a public place, but I can't see that it's illegal.

There's gotta be more to this than just a 3-4-graf internet story.

  6. Here's the initial story, not much more. Glad to see the Sac Bee staff is looking into it ...

If having footage of cheerleaders doing their routines is "possessing obscene matter depicting sexual conduct of a person under 18" then cheerleaders shouldn't be performing these obscene routines in the first place, right?

How the hell can you say what they're doing isn't obscene in person but becomes obscene on videotape?

  8. Because the guy has HDTV and really good slo-mo.

Sounds like he had no reason to be there, other than sneaking some video.

So cheerleading is porn now? Those parents who insist it's a sport won't be happy. Is ESPN broadcasting child porn everytime it shows a high school cheerleader, or gymnast, or volleyball, etc? If a parent was taking the pictures, would it be ok? Do you have to have a blood relative competing for it not to be creepy? If he wasn't trying to hide the camera, but was openly doing it, would it be ok? Couldn't he just say he was scouting? This makes no sense as it's being reported now.

  11. "If they see someone videotaping more than one or two squads performing, they come around and they ask you to leave and shut your camera off. So they're very conscious of what goes on at competitions," Berka said.

That's from the last linked story. If that is how they feel, then why the hell are they allowing the girls to compete at all?

Interesting case. I don't see how filming a fully-clothed public competition is pornography, but this guy sure seems like he was doing it to get his rocks off. He's a business reporter and wasn't there in a capacity for the paper. Had no relatives or friends in the competition (that I can gather from the story) and was trying to conceal the camera.

Legally, I'd be surprised if this flies. They might want to have a look at his home PC, though. It's a good bet there's something to make a stronger case on there.
