I'm getting ready to take a trip with Dad to the Reno/Tahoe area. Driving up to Reno Sunday, spending a couple of days there, then a couple of days at Lake Tahoe.

Anyone who's been there or knows the area, any suggestions on things to do, places to go that'll get me away from the casino for a while would be appreciated.

Make sure you stop in to say hi to ... well ... everyone. We're only 15 minutes away.

For Reno, Brew Brothers inside the Silver Legacy/Eldorado complex is a great place to drink and eat ... although you'll want to get out of there before the late night party crowd gets in there.

Reds 395 in Carson City is a hell of a place. Great beer selection, great food.

Make sure you DON'T accidentally wander into Circus Circus (attached to Silver Legacy/Eldorado). Unless you're 15, you will seriously regret it. (Although the Steakhouse at Circus Circus is outstanding.)

Scout out well in advance if you're interested in playing poker. I couldn't find a decent cash game last time, and even the tournaments can be kind of stupid. Basically, don't get your hopes up.

If you're headed west of Reno on 80, stop in Truckee. Very different vibe from the casino- or resort-related stuff. You can get great eats and kill an afternoon just hanging out. Truckee River is great this time of year.

Do make sure you stop in at the Biltmore and get a taste of the local scene for people in Truckee/Kings Beach.

If you like dive joints, hit the Nugget Diner in downtown Reno. The Nugget is a slots-only joint and the red-stool diner is in back. Get the "Awful-Awful" burger with fries and a vanilla shake.

I heartily (or heart-attackedly) second the awful-awful and fries.
I can live without the vanilla shake, though. That's just too much for one sitting.

For 15 minutes, can't you just commute?

I love the West shore and Squaw Valley. Take the tram up to the top of Squaw Valley.

Yeah, you're right. As a longtime poster, I can't believe I let that gopher pitch go by.

    Thanks for the tips, everyone.

Enjoy the drive from Reno to Mount Rose into Tahoe. Truly gorgeous and I do miss the scenery. Somewhere in my bag of photo/video and snowboard stuff I have a tape with the drive. Stuff I take for granted, but an amazing drive nonetheless.
