You know, when we all found out how scientists were fooling the public and making up the "global warming" crisis? It appears the shoe is now on the other foot. Meet the people behind the ongoing effort to undercut climate science:

An anonymous donor calling him (or her)self "Heartland Insider" has released the Heartland Institute's budget, fundraising plan, its Climate Strategy for 2012 and sundry other documents (all attached) that prove all of the worst allegations that have been levelled against the organization.

It is clear from the documents that Heartland advocates against responsible climate mitigation and then uses that advocacy to raise money from oil companies and "other corporations whose interests are threatened by climate policies." Heartland particularly celebrates the funding that it receives from the fossil fuel fortune being the Charles G. Koch Foundation.

Heartland also continues to collect money from Philip Morris parent company Altria as well as from the tobacco giant Reynolds American, while maintaining ongoing advocacy against policies related to smoking and health.

Heartland's policy positions, strategies and budget distinguish it clear as a lobby firm that is misrepresenting itself as a "think tank" - it budgets $4.1 million of its $6.4 million in projected expenditures for Editorial, Government Relations, Communications, Fundraising, and Publications, and the only activity it plans that could vaguely be considered policy development is the writing of a curriculum package for use in confusing high schoolers about climate change.

The main difference from Climategate, of course, is that these are policy statements instead of private e-mails and were not obtained through hacking. It will also be telling how different Heartland's response is to when the supposedly telling Climategate e-mails were released. Back then, it said:

The release of these documents creates an opportunity for reporters, academics, politicians, and others who relied on the IPCC to form their opinions about global warming to stop and reconsider their position. The experts they trusted and quoted in the past have been caught red-handed plotting to conceal data, hide temperature trends that contradict their predictions, and keep critics from appearing in peer-reviewed journals. This is new and real evidence that they should examine and then comment on publicly.

I was for some reason rather disappointed to find Microsoft on the list of Heartland contributors. Seems to run counter to the ethos of the Gates Foundation.

I guess liberals will stop at nothing -- including identity theft -- to discredit those who prove them to be frauds.

However, the statement from Heartland communications director, Jim Lakely, identifies only one of the eight documents posted online on Tuesday night by the DeSmogBlog website as a "total fake". That document, two pages headlined "Confidential Memo: Heartland Climate Strategy", largely duplicates information contained in the other documents.
Those documents – containing details on future projects such as a $100,000 campaign to "dissuade teachers from teaching science", as well as fundraising efforts – have been confirmed, in part, by Heartland itself, corporate donors such as Microsoft, and climate sceptic blogger Anthony Watts, who hoped to benefit from Heartland fundraising this year.

And inasmuch as the "Climategate" emails were obtained via hacking, the hypocrisy is stunning. Well, it would be stunning coming from anyone other than o_t.

At the time, Heartland said the theft of those personal emails created "an opportunity for reporters, academics, politicians" to revise their belief in climate change.

It's been a warm winter so my finger in the (warm) wind test tells me more laymen believe in Global Warming now. Next time it snows, they'll be saying the liberals are nuts. That's the way it works.
