I haven't relaxed since about 1979, so I'm probably not much help. But I can usually "get away from it all" for an hour or so by going to the gym and running, riding a stationary bike, using the stair stepper, doing push-ups, crunches, whatever.

    Dyno,

When I'm stressed and need to relax, which is often, given my profession, I choose progressive relaxation.

It takes a while, but it's WELL worth it.

I go to a temple, get down with Buddha.

Not into seeking enlightenment? Meditate or go to a church when it's empty.

Taking a walk, getting the bong out, going to Barnes and Noble, masturbating/having sex, doing yoga and working out were all good suggestions, too.

Bong + painting a room = complete zone out.

  5. Slaughter a pig then bathe in its blood. Does the trick for me!

    But seriously...when all else fails:

I'll second the yoga and the hot bath with a book. I also find baking to be relaxing, mostly b/c it gets my mind off the issue that stressing me off.

    Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

And LSS, I always preferred the Kountry Kwencher. When I was in college, the 7-Eleven had Boone's for $1 even with tax. If you had a dollar, you could party that night.

I sleep. It may be an escapist reflex, but napping or sleeping forces your body to calm down, and you can view the world through less-tired eyes when you wake up.

Wow ... you're more talented than me. I can't get a wink of sleep unless I'm relaxed first.

I keep a playlist handy for just such a purpose.

  11. Try porn. Killing a few kittens always takes the edge off.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions (and for the nice PMs I got). I'm feeling better today.

My advice to all of you (which I have trouble following myself): give yourself a break and don't be so hard on yourself.
