  1. I seem to have lucked out. Current lady friend works evening shift at a call center and is rather independent to begin with.

This morning, I was running late for a sitdown interview and she assisted in the frenzied getting-ready process.

I'm still a bit paranoid things will sour once football season arrives, only because I get in "work mode" as I get more mentally aggressive trying to compete on my beat from 100 miles away.

Jumping off Moddy's survey idea, a poll of baseball beat writers would be even more revealing. Damn near every one of them I know is divorced/had multiple marriages/is in a troubled marriage. The ones who can make it work are either incredibly disciplined, have incredibly understanding spouses, or some combination of the two.

I'm with Frank on this one: Finding someone who is independent-minded and has his/her own interests and pursuits is the way to go. When you meet someone in whom you're interested, better to lay out the whole truth about the job at the beginning -- the hours, the weekends, the holidays. If he/she bolts, well, as much as that sucks, it's better than the frustration of being involved with someone who harbors some notion that one day things will be different.

My years as an ink-stained wretch prepared me well for dating a dancer.
Both of us worked into the early morning.
She got groped by customers; I had to deal with a unionized composing room.
Coaches called me with tips after games; coaches stuffed tips into her garter after games.
I worked for a company selling watered-down content; she worked for a company selling watered-down drinks.

Nurses are really good with their hands. Which is a wonderful quality for a woman to have.
