Cal Poly and UC Davis to join Big Sky for football only, leaving Great West and staying in Big West (which stopped sponsoring football in the mid-90s) in everything else.

Good move for both, mainly, because they'll be in a conference someone has heard of. The rivalries between the schools, as well as Sacramento State, gets cranked up a bit, and the Big Sky gets more presence in California. And they stay in the Big West, which is a good fit athletically and travel-wise.

This could be another stake in the heart of the WAC as well, since Davis and Poly have been in the mix when talking expansion.

The Great West is almost literally college sports purgatory -- you put in your newbie time or your penance for being a shitty program, then you find a home. It's like the pound for low-majors, except nobody's gotten around to putting Texas-Pan American to sleep.

As a former SID at Texas-Pan American..... I resemble that remark.

But, seriously, the Big Sky is positioning itself for survival if/when current members leave for the WAC or another FBS conference. Losing an anchor like Montana, which is a perennial football powerhouse, will be a big blow for the Big Sky.

It also strengthens the Big Sky, which has proven to be pretty weak, other than Montana (which then gets waxed by the CAA) once the playoffs start.

The Big Sky has resisted Southern Utah for years, but I can't see them turning the T-birds down now. They're actively seeking a 12th team, and I wouldn't think they'd want North Dakota or South Dakota. SUU is truly the last man standing out there.

SUU and Dixie State need to merge and become branch campuses of the same university. Pool resources, athletics teams and facilities. Football can play in SG, basketball in Cedar, etc., etc.

They'd have one very nice little I-AA program there

Utah Valley wants to know how it can get in on that deal.

Start a football team and build a stadium.

And hire a coach who smokes a pipe on the sideline (crossthread).

Hell, Montana has been to the FCS title game five times in the past 10 years. No other FCS school can match that track record this decade. Big Sky got three teams in the playoffs last season, so not a bad league.
