Looks like Roger Toland is leaving. Any word on what they're going to do with this position?

You could do worse than live in RCSD. It's in the banana belt of the Black Hills and gets cold, but not as gawd-awful cold at the rest of the Dakotas. Not to far to Deadwood if you the gambling type, Sturgis is just up the road, Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse are just down the road and Devils Tower is about two hours west.

They cover a ton of local stuff. POst 22 Legion baseball is big, motorsports, youth baseball, two high schools in the city and another at the air base, plus SD Tech.

If you're outdoorsy at all, that's a beautiful place to live. And a bigger paper than you might think.

    50K, maybe?

To be fair, he covered the entirety of Post 22's run from just another Legion team to a national phenomenon. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more successful HS sports program.

The batting helmets in the field are just weird, though.

Back in the day, the 30k hometown rag covered my Legion team as a beat in the summer. It's names people know and is better than wires. Plus, we had several hundred show up for most games.

Nobody's saying that's unusual; I can think of bigger papers that, if not covering specific teams every game, nevertheless gave strong Legion coverage. But for a guy to have spent so long with a team to the point where the two are identified with each other, that's right bloody unique.

    Now officially open: http://www.journalismjobs.com/Job_Listing.cfm?JobID=825161

The Rapid City Journal (30,000 circ.) is looking for an enthusiastic leader for its five-person sports department. The ideal candidate will look to take the department beyond bats and balls and box scores, and produce enterprise stories, special niche pages, and compelling feature stories. We're the second-largest paper in the state and we think big, so you'll need a vision for fresh, bold ideas which can help make us one of the best sports sections in the country. In addition, our new sports editor must know how to make the most of the breadth and immediacy of our Web site; we're looking for fast and accurate sports updates, interactive sports blogs, as well as multimedia ideas to complement our print edition.

Please send resume/clips/references to Editor, Rapid City Journal, PO Box 450, Rapid City, SD 57709. No calls please.

Looks like they're looking for a reporter, too: http://www.journalismjobs.com/Job_Listing.cfm?JobID=825164

The Rapid City Journal (30,000 circ.) is looking for a talented sportswriter/copy editor to join its five-person sports department. The ideal candidate should not only be able write strong game stories, columns, features and enterprise, but should also be able to help edit copy, take calls and paginate sports pages. QuarkXPress experience helpful. We feature small college sports, strong American Legion baseball, but our bread-and-butter is our high school/community sports coverage. We offer the beautiful Black Hills as a backdrop with its outstanding quality of life and great outdoors/recreation opportunities.

Please send resume/clips/references to Editor, Rapid City Journal, PO Box 450, Rapid City, SD 57709. No calls please.
