    Unquestionably, largely because of the three "isms": Nationalism, Imperialism and Militarism.

    It made the US grow up as a country. But the ramifications -- already neatly spelled out above -- of WW I were as far reaching as any event in the 20th century.

    Left out of that description was the development of advanced weaponry: poison gas, the tank, the flamethrower, the airplane, the machine gun (which had been used by the English in Africa, but not to this effect). This contributed to the horrific loss of life, because that 20th century weaponry was combined with 18th century military tactics.
