If those who couldn't afford to play the lottery didn't, the lottery would cease to exist.

Spending a few bucks a week won't hurt anything. Spending 50-100 bucks a week...that's just stupid.

That's why I stopped playing. I've been so much better off without winning.

So what you're saying is a good basis for American taxation is to prey on the addicted. God help us.

Frankly, I don't know how Hawaii and Utah keep schools open and infrastructure from crumbling (they're still the only two states without some form of gambling, right?).

See I thought taxes would claim about 1/2 the total, not 2/3. But then he's probably the kind of guy that will buy a new truck, maybe reno the house, buy a few cows, and then sit on the remaining $87 million.

I haven't read the story, but coming from the country, I can see him sinking a good chunk into the ranch to make it a profitable place. No rancher can just stop working all together.

Actually, 40 percent of these big jackpots go to taxes. Cash value is usually about 53-55 percent of the announced jackpot value.

I don't think they would stop working either, but in terms of big spending sprees, probably not happening. He'll sit on the vast majority of it. That's all I meant.

No, no, no - the government will make good use of all that money and if we don't ask lottery winners to pay almost 2/3rds of their winnings back to the government then how can we pay for roads!!!!! ::)

If you keep voting for Democrats and Republicans, you get what you deserve. But hey, it is noble work to keep these two parties this one party in power.......

Oh no.Alabama, with the curious help of the Christian Coalition and Mississippi Casinos, has managed to keep any form of lottery out of the state. Casinos? Nope. Electronic bingo is legal in some counties, but the honor bound want to ditch that too since it's too much like slot machines...
