So, nobody's actually saying it, but in my shop it just seems like its understand that we're not supposed to ask. With all the buyouts/layoffs fears and rumors swirling, there's a sense that it's just plain bad form to even think about raises. But if nobody asks, nobody gets em. Is not asking for raises the new etiquette?

What are these ``raises'' you speak of?

  6. Make them look you in the eye when they are screwing you over. Ask for it at the usual time.

Buddy who works in a relative white-collar sweatshop, cubicle city, something out of Dilbert or The Office, was moaning about how his performance review pegs him at a raise of about 4.5 percent to 5 percent. But the company, in a nod to the economy, is going to only give him 3 percent.

This is in some non-essential, 8-to-5, M-F environment. No one getting laid off either.

Yeah, he's got it real rough. I just zipped my lip though. He is, after all, a buddy. More power to him.

Aquaintence works at a Gatehouse shop that's currently negotiating a new contract. Their wage offer: 0 percent.

    I got a 2.5 percent raise and a 22 percent bonus.

...But I don't work for a newspaper, so that would explain it.

    Raises?

In the words of Ozzie Guillen, "hummph....please."
