LOS ANGELES - Allan Melvin, a character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died.

He was 84. Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years.

The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show."

Damn. Sam was one of my favorite recurring bit characters. He's the only who made Alice swoon...

Now, he'll be keeping Mr. Brady busy while cutting up veal for the Big Guy upstairs.

Supply Sgt. Charlie Hacker on "Gomer Pyle."

Several roughneck characters on "Andy Griffith."

A long-forgotten Army buddy on "Dick Van Dyke."

I'm ashamed that I know this... But you're wrong. We find out years later in "A Very Brady Christmas" that he and Alice did get married.

    Tube steak, well done. :)

RIP, Allan. He was also on All In The Family playing a recurring character for many years (Barney??)... he'll be missed.
