Questions on photo credits and other subjects

The subject line seems broad, but my series of questions for the board members stems from a question asked of me during the Shelton Invitational at Shelton, Washington.

I was covering the event and saw a young man named Sean Keller from Heritage High School. This young man throws above 230 feet and I snagged a few photos of him throwing. It was recommended to me by a local fan that I should send the photos to other publications. I said I was using my newspaper's camera, but he asked why couldn't I get my name out there.

So that question is really being asked of everyone here. I noticed that some photographers have their photos picked up by national media (not saying that a javelin thrower from Washington is going to be on ESPN).
