Do the Yankees get draft picks since they lose Rodriguez to FA?

I don't think so. I don't think there was compensation on a second free agent contract because the whole point was that there was compensation for the costs of minor league development. If somebody would trade for a person who had not been a free agent, those costs would in theory be caught.

Are you sure? I thought I read somewhere that the Red Sox would get compensation if Lowell left, but I could be wrong.

Assuming the Yankees offer Rodriguez arbitration, which they will, they'd be entitled to Type A free agent compensation, which is the first-round pick that belonged to the signing team and a sandwich pick. The top 15 overall picks are protected.

There is no arbitration to offer. He opted out of the contract.

Is there an exception for opt-outs? If so, I'm unaware of it. All other free agents are eligible for the arbitration process, if they choose.

A-Rod is not eligible for arbitration. He opted out of a contract and made hmself a free agent.
Arbitration is designed to "protect" the team that had prior contractual rights to a player. A-Rod terminated the contract. The Yankees have no rights to offer arbitration.

You're right. J.D. Drew did not bring draft compensation last season.
