Proofreading gone wrong

  1. Boy, when things start going bad for the Cardinals they really go bad. Even the web site copy editors are affected by the recent slump.

    I once typed "shit put" instead of shot put (Ahem, not on purpose). No one caught it until the next day. Even the publisher had a good laugh. The girl that part of the track team's story was about told everyone it was a cow-chip tossing contest.

    Well, not the typing of the headline itself. But the fact that it regenerated in three different places. I'm saying it's doubtful that the guy typed it in like that three separate times.

    And of course you preview it before it goes live. Just like you double-check every page proof and read each headline and caption twice. Just because it's in a process doesn't mean it always happens. Steps get skipped when time runs short.

    He likely didn't get fired for the headline. He likely got fired for not showing it to the copy chief for approval. Then it would've been caught.
