The Press Democrat, the flagship daily newspaper of Sonoma Media Investments, is seeking a full-time sports writer to cover professional and college teams in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The position would go beyond the daily coverage of games and would instead focus on broader reporting on these teams and athletes – exploring trends, crafting features and enterprise, and breaking news off your beat.

The position would demand an active digital presence to reach an audience that follows every move made by Bay Area sports teams, which includes some of the nation’s most prominent NFL, NBA and MLB franchises. It requires an online-first mindset, including the ability to engage readers on social networks, create efficient video reports, and use other digital tools to break news and tell stories.

The ideal candidate is someone who is excited to help shape the rapidly changing face of sports journalism, with effective reporting and writing skills, a rich knowledge of sports and the ability to react quickly and accurately in a very competitive environment. You must know how to juggle daily stories, online posts, social media interaction and long-term enterprise projects. A minimum of five years covering a major sports beat for a daily newspaper or digital platform is required.

We offer an opportunity to grow your career at our award-winning family of publications, with opportunities to contribute to our daily newspaper, websites and regional magazine. All have been recognized as among the best in their respective categories, one of the reasons our news products enjoy some of the highest readership rates in California.

The position would require night and weekend work. It would entail very little, if any, travel except for occasional postseason games.

The Press Democrat is based in Santa Rosa, California, an hour north of San Francisco. We offer a competitive compensation plan, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, accident insurance and paid time off. We are committed to a drug- and alcohol-free workplace. Any job offer is conditional upon completion of a background investigation and pre-employment drug testing. This reporting position requires a valid California driver’s license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation.

To be considered, please submit a cover letter, a list of story ideas, your resume and up to six samples of your best work to: hr@pressdemocrat.com. Include the title “Bay Area sports writer” in the subject line.
