Prison escapes always fascinate me, and this is one of the most fascinating ones ever.

You kind of figured it would end this way, especially once they found their DNA in the hunting cabin a few days ago:

One down. The other is still on the loose.

Richard Matt, who was serving 25 years to life for the torture and murder of a North Tonawanda businessman, was gunned down by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection tactical officer Friday afternoon, 21 days after he and fellow inmate David Sweat were discovered missing from a maximum security prison.

Now, a furious manhunt is underway for Sweat.

Sweat was with Matt when the shootout went down, about 40 miles away from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. Matt was killed immediately but Sweat managed to run away, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told The Buffalo News.

K-9 units have a strong track on the escapee, and a line of officers is slowly and methodically pushing through an area to try to flush him out of the woods just north of Lake Titus in the Adirondacks, the source said.

He can't run all night, and them dogs will want to gnaw him to the bone. This will be over in 24 hours or less, 48 tops.

Hope one or more of the coppers turned on the helmet/body cam to record the first shootout.

BountyHuntersLive.org would make a pretty penny.

They should have split up the minute they escaped. One in one direction, the other goes another way. Increases their chances that at least one of them gets away as cops get leads in opposite directions.

Wondering about the scenario for the dead guy:

    1) Was he running from hunters and got shot dead?

    2) Did he have a weapon and exchange fire and got shot dead?

    Or

    3) Was he found, with no weapons, and in a split second that would determine his fate thought "I ain't going back" and charged the hunters like a maniac and got shot dead?

And the next one, from the early '80s, goes out to David Sweat.

Here's CNN on how it went down:

As they stepped inside, the smell of gun smoke hung in air. And it looked to them like someone had just been in the cabin, but fled out the back door, D'Amico said. They pursued.

Outside, something moved. And they heard something that sounded like coughing. It wasn't an animal noise; it was human, D'Amico said. It didn't take long for a customs and border protection tactical team to come face-to-face with Matt.

"They told him to put up his hands," D'Amico said.

Authorities have warned from the start that the pair of fugitives might get their hands on guns. Matt did. And it may have been his undoing at that moment. Matt didn't shoot, but he also didn't comply with officers' order, so they opened fire.

"We recovered a 20-gauge shotgun from Matt's body at the location," said D'Amico.
