I don't really have a huge need for a printer/scanner at home, but a need does arise from time to time. What should I be looking for exactly? Any recommendations? Thx.

Laser. Do NOT buy an inkjet for any reason. Get the cheapest brand name one you can (Brother, etc.) that meets your needs. I have never dropped more than $150 on an all-in-one, and they last remarkably well if you take care of them.

Here is a good sumary from Consumer Reports
Top Printer Ratings | Printer Buying Guide – Consumer Reports

I got an HP Ink Jet multi task printer a few years back for $69 with rebate and it has
worked fine. Set up was easy. I would definitely want wireless and also ability to
    print off phone and tablet.

Cartridges can be expensive. You may want to compare replacement cartridge costs vs
different printers. I needed more for scanning and faxing so I did not worry about it but
If you are doing a lot of printing Laser is probably cheaper.
