God, that's the best thing I've read in a long time.

I think it was excellent because Reilly, who relies on simplistic moralizing when he mails it in, told the story without trying to put a bow on it.

    Nice job, Rick.

Just got my copy and read it.. excellent column...Liked how he punched the kid in the face who asked about his mom...

Liked the column, but I wish he had found a way to get THE quote higher.

"I think we all believed he would try to kill us all one day. I'd kind of been preparing to shoot my father for a while." higher.

I haven't read many more powerful quotes, ever. That's an amazing quote.

Good point. That's almost good enough to break the "Don't lede with a quote," rule.

I disagree. I like the lede where the kid and his dad are wrestling over a shotgun. I immediately pictured it in my mind.

I agree with Ace. I thought after reading the first sentence, it was going to be a sentimental, possibly schmatzy story about how the kid kept on wrestling after good 'ol dad died. The line about the shotgun stopped me cold.

Plus, it's only a 700 word column. And the story wasn't about the daughter. If it was about the daughter, I think you put that quote higher. It was about Corey, though.

It tied in the sport and the situation perfectly.

    Great lead.

Are you naturally an idiot, or do you have to work at it?

I think it works either way. Reilly's lede was great, though.

Wow. That's just unbelievable. A story involving an athlete who shot a parent in self-defense should be off limits to a sportswriter? I guess if a player gets hurt, the medical writer should handle it, right?

He's naturally an idiot. He's proven it on multiple occasions.
