    Disagree.

The "Lost Cause" myth certainly attempted to paint the portrait of the stately plantation owner, tending to his flock of slaves with the same love a parent might show his children. It was - in large part - an attempt to white wash slave owning and segregation, to demonstrate to those damn interfering liberals the many positive points of white supremacy.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this was in the context of a much larger discussion. And Woodward isn't wrong, is he? As every story about Trump draws front page, full caps headlines, we're numbed to the point that things that should take down a presidency don't seem all that revelatory.

No reporter is not going to pursue stories like this. If they are not revelatory, it's because the audience knows what Trump is.

"TRUMP USES LEGAL TAX LOOPHOLES" was an all-time low-water mark for media sensationalism that will be studied for decades to come.

When a candidate and then President does not make their tax returns public, any part of them, even the legal boring parts, will be news. No one here who's ever worked in journalism has not worked for an outlet that has overhyped a story in the pursuit of an audience. Hell, the food section does it.

That attitude, which you defend on the basis that "it's always been this way," is the biggest reason people tune out most Trump "scandals" now.

Don't make excuses for poor journalism.
