I seem to remember Republican shit-fits at the very mention of sitting down at a table to negotiate with the Taliban.

It's long past time to get out of Afghanistan - though I do hope we maintain a military presence if only for operational flexibility. Too many people will think this means that all of those who died there "died in vain" - but its better than having one more person die to justifiy the sacrifices of others.

Trump has surrendered Afghanistan to the Taliban. That’s all there is to it. He made a deal with Islamic extremists. US gets to quietly leave and Islamic terrorists get another base of operation to train terrorists. Trump and his followers show their cowardice again.
Big talk about turning Afghanistan into a parking lot. But he showed that he’s a weak loser. Media won’t call him on it.

And if Obama had done it in Jan. 2009, the right-wing screech machine would have wanted him lynched from the nearest telephone pole.
    Oh wait, they did anyway.

I don't have a problem with getting out of there. When the old saw "Never get into a land war in Asia" was coined, they were talking about the British presence in Afghanistan, and the Afghans are just as stubbornly resistant as they were then. OTOH, basically all this agreement is doing is asking the Taliban to stop killing so many people until we can get our asses out of the country so our withdrawal does not look so bad. It's a fig leaf at best.

We're tucking tail and running, and all of the lives and treasure that we expended there are gone down a rathole, same as in Iraq. It sucks hard to leave that way but the generals were never going to admit that they couldn't do a damn thing to permanently defeat the Taliban.

When I worked in Marquette we ran an Iran page — a full page of Iran news every day during the hostage crisis
Then the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and it became the Afran page
Then we boycotted the Olympics and it became the Oly Afran page
Sometime after that we said fuck it

I seem to remember Republicans saying any withdrawal was a surrender because our colors don’t cut and run and we needed to fight them over there so we didn’t fight them over here.

It’s interesting how flip-flopping, which was considered by Republicans to be a sin, is now OK.

"Why do we have to have donkeys? You'd think sometime the Afghans could think about building some fucking roads?"
