    It’s hard to lose and then be perceived as anything but a loser. Reagan was the path not taken to Ford, Bush 43 was basically a third term of Reagan and McCain was wounded by 2000 but still seen as the seasoned pro going against the upstart in Obama.

    I think being the Senior Senator from California for a few decades will carry a hell of a lot more clout. Feinstein will retire soon enough.

    Republicans nominate losers all the time, Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Romney, McCain. Even Trump ran before as part of the Reform Party in 2000.
