I’m not sure what precisely the big deal is with the question.

We’re talking about standards for president. I ask a poster what a POTUS ought to be project.

The answer: The very best of us.

    My question: What is that?

Pretty easy question. Broad, but easy. Because “the very best of us” is just a thing to say.

And you really can't think of a single admirable presidential attribute yourself?

If I'm feeling REALLY generous, Trump can occasionally do humor. And there must be some kind of intelligence in there somewhere.

    That's about it, though.

Jimmy Carter aside, our presidents would struggle to reach the Mendoza Line with that list.

The current Commander in Chief just happens to be batting about .020.

    • Landis : [interviewing Elaine for a job] Not many people have grace.

Elaine Benes : Well, you know, grace is a tough one. I like to think I have a little grace. Not as much as Jackie O...

Landis : You can't have a little grace. You either have grace or you don't.

Elaine Benes : Okay, fine. I have no grace.

Landis : And you can't acquire grace.

Elaine Benes : Well, I have no intention of getting grace.

Landis : Grace isn't something you can pick up at the market.

Elaine Benes : [annoyed] Alright, alright, look, I don't have grace, I don't want grace, I don't even say grace, okay?

Landis : Thank you for coming in.
Elaine Benes : Yeah yeah right.

Even GWB, derided as a moron by many, often including me, at least made an attempt to fake most of them. He understood that's what a president should do.

Fatfckck doesn't, and is proud of it. As many have often noted, the cruelty is the point.

The necessary characteristics of a competent president are the same as those of of any leader: wisdom, courage, selflessness, decisiveness, empathy, a sense of duty, and the ability to read and understand people. I think most other characteristics can fit into one of those buckets. The president is first and foremost a decision-maker responsible for charting a course that maximizes the aggregate long-term happiness for a large, heterogeneous group of people. In a weird, ironic way, the fact that Trump is a complete disaster and cretin of a human obscures how seriously devoid he is of the characteristics that truly matter in an actionable way to being a "good" president, the same way many politicians' charisma and surface-level interpersonal characteristics obscure how unsuited they are for the job.
