Love that Alma definitely believes the “It was my wife’s idea” story. And Ted Cruz works hard. And Alma doesn’t vote Republican.

Re: Bradley and Senators working 14-hour days

I have a feeling things have changed so much since he left office in 1997 that he’s both wrong and right at the same time.

Yeah, Senators back then put in long hours crafting legislation and horse trading to get earmarks for their states. But now? Now they put in long hours fundraising. It’s their No. 1 job now - certainly much bigger than in Bradley’s time.

I was reading a story a long time ago about first-year Congressmen and how they were adjusting to their new jobs. The story started with an anecdote about how this one Congressman, every night, left Capitol Hill, went to some office nearby, and spent their nights on the phone fundraising for multiple hours.

They weren’t allowed to fundraise at the Capitol, so they had to go off-site, and there was considerable pressure from the top about fundraising enough for both themselves and for everyone else. Multiple freshmen Congressmen, from both parties, said they hated doing this and that they thought the job would be more about helping people and crafting legislation than fundraising for the next election.

Federally funded elections would fix most of this.

So the government decides who gets money to run for government positions? Sounds square.

If you gather enough signatures to get your name on the ballot, you get money. CONSPIRACY!
