    Can someone explain to me why France is so upset over this? Doesn’t it have a strong nuclear program? Even if France still has colonial possessions out that way Australia is not going to attack. Is France just trying to make China happy?

    Australia had a $66 billion deal to buy subs from the French. Now that deal has been cancelled and Australia's subs will be built by American firms. Which is great for my nephew, who works for General Dynamics in New London.

    C'est la vie.

    It's the loss of a big contract for an important French industry which the French thought they had in the bag. They thought the Aussies were just dickering over price and other terms while the Aussies were thinking "fuck this, we can do better." So what the US (and most sensible people) regards as the usual sharp elbows of arms exporting, the French government sees as a double dealing betrayal.
