    from journalismjobs.com....

The Missoulian seeks a high-energy reporter for its prep sports beat.

The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of the Montana high school sports scene, be versed in the digital presentation of news including the ability to shoot video, and have strong writing and organizational skills. This beat also includes coverage of our minor league baseball team, the Missoula Osprey.

    etc. etc....here's the link

Once again, I'll profess my love for Missoula.

Haven't seen the paper a whole lot since I left the Big Sky beat, aside from my trip there this year for a football game. They do a pretty good job with preps. Not sure how far out of Missoula the coverage area extends. UM is obviously their crown beat, and they do outstanding work on that. I'm sure there's some opportunity to pitch in on the Griz in some regard.

The town is really cool. Pretty good bar scene, good restaurants, lots of Indian casinos if that's your thing. If you're not from out West or haven't lived in a city like Missoula, the isolation can be jarring. Spokane's three hours away, Butte two, Bozeman four. Airport is big enough to support jets, though, and you can get to a lot of places from MSO. The outdoor scene is fabulous as well. If I were 22 again and had a chance to start my career somewhere, I'd consider it.

Not sure about Lee. I left a Lee paper two months after the sale so I never really got the experience.

Anyone have a ballpark on pay? Seems like a cool first job...

They do some good work on preps as well as UM. Worked at a sister paper, so we would often trade out stories and photos. There are four Lee papers in Montana (Missoula, Helena, Butte and Billings), so that helps on preps, colleges and minor league baseball, because, yes, the driving distances are daunting. (There's no such thing as a short drive in Montana.)

There are four classes (AA-C) of high schools in Montana. Only 14 AA schools in the state, all clustered in the seven larger "cities". Missoula has three of those. Funny thing about preps in Missoula is that no one has figured out why their football is not better than it is. Been something like 20+ years since any of the three AA teams has won a state title.

Missoulian covers maybe a dozen HS regularly (including some private schools in smaller classes) and a dozen more scattered across western Montana when they do well (playoffs, etc.) Missoula regulary hosts state championships in cross country, wrestling and golf as well.

Missoula, like most Lee papers, pays dick.

As a general rule, Lee seems pretty comparable to other major chains.

Your post is banal and signifies nothing.

In other words, they don't pay worth a sh*t ...
