MarinIJ.com and the Marin Independent Journal located in San Rafael -- the trusted news source covering Marin County's 11 cities and towns -- seeks a sharp and enthusiastic high school sports reporter. Ownership areas include coordination and coverage of all Marin high school sports while using pagination and content management skills to produce stories, print editions and web displays. The reporter will communicate with editors, photographers, freelancers, coaches, parents and students to develop our coverage plan. The Marin IJ offers in-depth coverage of high school sports. We cover the games seriously, all the while looking for the uncovered tale of triumph and poise. Pete Carroll, Buddy Biancalana, Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Steve Lavin, Mike McCoy, Travis LaBoy, Bud Norris, Will Venable, Kahlil Bell and Jared Goff are just a few of the legendary Marin prep standouts. We are a dynamic and fast-paced daily with an intelligent readership and tons of interesting community issues for the right reporte. We're looking for someone who is curious and thoughtful, with keen attention to detail, who is fired up about using digital tools to tell stories. We do it all here at the IJ -- short web hits, live event coverage, longer enterprise-style pieces for our section fronts, all while posting, tweeting, taking video and even live blogging when the moment calls for it. Ideal applicants have previous newspaper or web experience covering sports; familiarity with social media tools; excellent writing skills; flexibility in night and/or weekend work, and the ability to work quickly an efficiently on deadline. The job includes full benefits, 401k and paid vacation. Pay is $17/hour. Send a cover letter, resume and five recent clips to sports editor Derek Arild at darild@marinij.com. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE. We require pre-employment drug screening and background checking. We are an EOE.
