Prep sports reporter -- Longview, Washington

The Daily News in Longview, Wash., seeks a talented journalist to take over its prep sports beat. This is a position tailor-made for a reporter ready to sink his or her teeth into a tradition-rich prep sports scene (15 high schools) filled with history, rivalry and passion.

The prep sports reporter will be counted on to produce content for The Daily News’ Preps+ print and digital products, including three seasonal special sections, a weekly Preps+ feature page and the TDN +Blog. This depth of production requires someone capable of writing clear, concise game stories on tight deadlines in addition to in-depth features, enterprise pieces and columns. Daily deadline experience is a pre-requisite and clips must demonstrate a wide range of sports coverage and storytelling.

Recent reporters on this beat moved on to jobs covering MLS and MLB teams at two major metro dailies.

The ideal candidate must have strong writing skills, a thorough understanding of AP style, and solid news judgment. Experience using social media in the field is a must; a background in newspaper design, photography and video is a bonus. Reliable transportation and the willingness to work evenings and weekends are required.

We are a drug-free workplace and all applicants considered for employment must pass a post-offer drug screen along with background and Department of Motor Vehicle checks before commencing employment. This position requires proof of auto insurance and a valid driver’s license.

As part of Lee Enterprises (www.lee.net), The Daily News offers a full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, vacation, sick leave and more, along with a professional and comfortable work environment.

To learn more about The Daily News and to apply for this position, please log onto Career Opportunities. A cover letter, resume, clips (no more than five) must be included with the application to be considered. Writing samples may be attached to the application's 'portfolio' button.

Please feel free to direct specific questions to sports editor Meg Wochnick at mwochnick@tdn.com, however to be considered for employment, you must apply online at Career Opportunities

From someone near this operation: "I would rather run through a plate glass window than work for Longview's publisher."

When considering this job, you'll have to take a long view of the situation.
