Possibly an Even Stranger (and Worse) Occurrence in the Life of Nancy Kerrigan

STONEHAM, Mass. -- The brother of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan has been charged with assaulting their 70-year-old father, who died over the weekend after a disturbance at the family's Massachusetts home.

A police report says officers responding to a 911 call around 1:30 a.m. ET Sunday found Daniel Kerrigan unconscious on the floor. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The report says 45-year-old Mark Kerrigan was found in the basement of the Stoneham home and was "belligerent and combative" when questioned. Officers used pepper spray to subdue him and eventually arrested him.

The report says Mark Kerrigan told officers he struggled with his father after the elder Kerrigan wouldn't let him use the phone.

Mark Kerrigan faces arraignment Monday on a charge of assault and battery on a person over 60 that resulted in injuries.

Nancy Kerrigan was struck in the kneecap at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1994, in a plot allegedly masterminded by the husband of her on-ice rival, Tonya Harding. She recovered in time to compete at the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Norway, where she won the silver medal.

What a horrible tragedy. I met the elder Kerrigan at Lillehammer. He was a super guy, I thought.

Rather strange that the Globe's home page doesn't mention the fact that he died. It's in the story itself, but not in the headlines or the synopsis. I imagine they don't want to imply or presume that the son killed the dad, but you've got to make it clear that the dad died, no?

Did he assault him with a baseball bat or a hubcap?
