Problem is, it is easier to play harder when you are getting paid as little as Pedroia is.

I undertand that. I get it. I can't stand Phillips, either.
And, I wasn't comparing apples. I was comparing dollars.
Just as I don't expect Pedroia or Youkilis to make that money in the future, I don't expect Beltran ever to sniff $19 million again.

He'll be 35 when this deal ends, so I think that's probably a reasonable conclusion, but he'll still got another 3-4 year deal that will pay him very well if he wants it. I bet the Yankees regret not going after Carlos when they had the chance to replace Bernie with him.

No doubt. No doubt at all. Beltran's pMLV is awesome. He's a very good player.
In my opinion, he's not worth $19 million.

Is Derek Jeter worth $21.6 million? Was Jason Giambi worth $23 million?
Are any players worth what they got when the market was soaring?

Markets are established by supply and demand, not what outsiders think.

That's great in Kansas City or Houston, where the electric chair is never warm, the phasers never set to stun and where there is no obligation to drop contract figures into the fourth graf of a gamer. At least an Ed Whitson had the good courtesy to crack and accept that he didn't have the stones for it.

I've always thought the whole "can you play in New York thing" is such a faux whatever. It's just a city. A big city, but a city.

And Beltran remains the best center fielder in baseball. So what's your point other than that he doesn't smile like Ken Griffey or goof around like Nick Swisher or beat water coolers like Paul O'Neill?
