I said earlier I'm not big fan of the Star Spangled Banner. But good luck watching this clip without crying:

Even if you wanted to ditch the anthem, you can't go wrong with America the Beautiful or God Bless the USA.

When you think about it - except for the tune, the lyrics are about as good as you could imagine. It's about an actual thing, not a medley of patriotic phrases and imagery and it's about a nation persevering after a struggle (our flag was still there) - and to think it was written some 50 years before the Civil War - just about perfect.

The anthem is still theirs. The lyrics were just changed in 1990, for obvious reasons. "To Communism's triumph lead us on" was changed to "Be glorious, our country. We are proud of you." And so on.

And yes, nothing can top it.

Even the rock version is cool.

Obviously, this should be in the running too.

(But only this version, not the one sung by the current Charlie Daniels who changes the lyrics of his songs to remove references to marijuana and alcohol use.)

One of the surrender terms at Appamattox should have been that the Battle Hymn of the Republic became the anthem.
