Vanity Fair and 60 Minutes asked the question over the weekend, and Bruce Springsteen won with 22 percent of the vote:

Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, John Williams, Jay-Z and Madonna finished behind The Boss.

I could get on board with all of those except Dolly Parton and Madonna. Those would be dreck.

If it happened, who would you want to write the new anthem?

It should be. Say what you want about our northern neighbors, but their anthem is much, much better than ours.

I thought Springsteen already wrote the new anthem. "Born in the USA," happy joy America forever, right? That's what Reagan told me, anyway.

At a Memorial Day event, the person in charge of the music played a version of Alabama's "American Pride" that included clips of Bush talking about 9/11 and how those responsible would be brought to justice. He followed that with some of Toby Keith's "We'll put a boot in your ass" song. Then, much to my amusement, he went to Springsteen.

Anyway, based on the way it's treated Lee fking Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" is already the de facto secondary anthem. It always bothers me when I see people treating it like the actual Anthem by standing and putting their hands on their hearts.

If Bob Dylan writes it, how will we know what the words are?

We'll wait for someone else to cover it.
