Shotglass, not trying to make you continue to smash your head into a wall, but we know that all money-making football programs are not created equal. When the protection of said program became an end unto itself, that's when desperate men who should know better (Curley, Schultz, Spanier and especially Paterno) risked everything to cover up horrific criminal behavior.

Not sure how you eliminate the possibility of that happening again unless you nuke the program, get the huge money out of it and re-constitute it as something more appropriate for an institution of higher learning.

I do wonder how many who voted "No" in this poll would render a hearty "Yes" if the question involved the widespread abandonment and eventual dissolution of the Catholic Church for its role in covering for pedophile priests.

    Interesting options.
It would be intriguing to see a Gallup poll on this issue.
The last one only 43% said they were football fans.
    That's a good distribution.

Since Penn State is a state university, clearly the state has culpability. Therefore, we need to shut down Pennsylvania.

Give Pittsburgh to Ohio, give Philly to New Jersey, and give the rest in the middle to Mississippi.

One molester and a few asshats looking to save their own bacon vs. thousands of kiddie touchers, with hundreds of higher-ups in Rome aiding and abetting the cause. The Catholic Church's actions affected many, many, many, many more people. And the church is paying for it.

Some of the comparisons being made here are ridiculous.

It's a football program. The world isn't going to stop spinning if it's parked for a while.

Yes. But. Nobody's world is going to stop spinning if it's not, either. :)

For the record, I am completely in favor of the death penalty for the Catholic church, too.

And they should lose some scholarships, too.

The NCAA could force them to put PSU on their helmets.

If you don't think college football has a created a culture that needs some serious cleansing and purging, just look at the shitshow being put on by its fanboys on these PSU threads.

You could end the sentence any number of ways. ". . . to shield the university from embarrassment and shame" being just one. For a university president, I would think that just might rank pretty high on the list of excuses for the cover-up.

When mommy tells abused daughter, "Shut your mouth! You know Uncle Chester loves you!", what is she protecting? Not a football program. But people act this way when confronted with these things. Way more than they should. Goes with being a weak human being.

A year off from football isn't going to "cleanse and purge" a damn thing. It accomplishes nothing.
