The behavior of a number of posters has been sliding downhill lately, and the number of complaints has been increasing. Things are starting to get out of hand again.

    1) We have asked people to keep politics to one thread. I understand it is difficult when a news event that generates a thread has political undertones, and we try to roll with the fact that some things don't have clear lines. But a few posters have been posting gratuitous remarks about Trump, Clinton, political party A or B, etc. on random threads. They are dumb comments meant to bait others. It’s not clever, and it drags down the board when it gets the intended responses. Do it, and you risk a suspension from the board and a ban if you have been a repeat problem. Please consider this a friendly warning as the election season heats up.

    2) If you don’t like another poster or don’t like what they post — no matter how offensive you find their opinion or provocative remark — IGNORE the person. ... unless you can respond without a personal attack or snide personal remark. The number of personal shots has been getting out of hand, and for a few posters it is getting repetitive -- they are posting that way more often that not. It makes you look as bad as the person you think you need to shout down or call a name. Please consider this a warning. We are going to tighten up the moderating on those kinds of posts when we see them. It is especially true of posts that take personal shots at people on threads they weren’t even participating on. If you don't like someone else, or have gotten into confrontations with the person in the past. ... IGNORE THE PERSON. Try to bait people at risk of getting booted from here.

    3) Please understand that we are trying to be the board moderators, not the board censors. A lot of posts getting reported are because one person finds another person’s comments offensive. The moderator seeing the reported post might agree, but we are sensitive about censoring posts. It's a slippery slope. If we don't delete something you were offended by. ... my suggestion is to IGNORE it and move on. Let the post reflect on the poster if you think it is offensive, and leave it at that. That includes someone you find racist or sexist or intentionally provocative, etc. Also, for some of you. ... don’t give someone posting that way the attention fix they were looking for with a response. Your personal attack makes you into as much of a problem as the original poster. If you do respond with a personal attack, YOU risk ending up suspended and/or banned. Again, just a friendly warning. Please ask yourself it is worth it.

    4) Please don't read this and start hammering the moderators with angry PMs about a poster you don't like not being banned or suspended, because in your judgment, etc. etc. ... . And don't get angry when things aren't immediately handled to your liking. We are not on here all day long, and we often don't see things immediately. And often your personal feud with someone is clouding your judgment. Report posts. It is helpful and it usually steers us to problems. But if things aren't moderated in a way you agree with, please respect our decisions ... and just move on.
