Plain Dealer guts union

    Didn't the company break the union by establishing Cleveland.com at a separate location to pretend it was a separate operation not subject to union rules?

    Nothing, but it would've been easier if those who took jobs there thought of that when they were hired.

    Fran, it use to be that nobody not in the union could cover anything that appeared in the newspaper unless you were covering something at least 50 miles outside of Cleveland. If they had kept that mandate in place I don't believe any of the Cleveland.com stories would have been able to appear in the newspaper, which would have been a game changer because nobody would have left the PD to join Cleveland.com. Giving up that mandate all but doomed the union and the people who decided to remain with the PD.
