Maybe I'm missing something, but why would the cop go to jail or even be in trouble? He got rushed late at night by a guy with a gun. Turns out it was a less than lethal type of weapon, but I'm pretty sure the right course of action there is to defend yourself because it could have been a 9 mm or something. The idiot who rushed him intended for the "pizza guy" to believe the gun was real. Unlucky for him the guy he planned to rob had a gun that was real. I think that's a little different than shooting a suspect wielding a flashlight or hero sandwich wrapped in foil. (image of shootout scene in Casino flashing through my head)

I don't think Bubbler thinks the cop's going to the clink.

Oh, OK. It just sort of read that way to me.

If that ever went to trial in Middle Tennessee, the jury would not only acquit, but take up a collection for the cop.

Speaking of which, if it was a legit order, would the officer get to keep the tip?

Only if the robber was a leper.

The story said "a man, 18, who carried a pistol and rushed the officer."

From that, it's not clear whether he actually pulled a gun on the officer, as opposed to merely showing it and not holding it. If he rushed the officer without a gun in his hands, the question would be, did he need to shoot this guy to death to apprehend him? One strike with a billy club might have done nicely.
