Rick Pitino says he wants to return. Does Pitino still collect money from Louisville? If so could a smaller school or a cheap NBA franchise hire him for $50,000 or so and have Louisville pay the rest?

If Louisville is paying almost all his salary I could see him returning pretty quickly. He could sell tickets, generate interest and sell some extra tickets. At the college level he is a good coach and could improve the program. I don't think the NCAA has banned him from coaching yet.

It would take a very cheap NBA franchise that is being run by idiots to hire him. Dan Gilbert is a difficult personality but I don't think he is an idiot so I think Cleveland is out. But I think he would be considered a front runner the next time Sacramento fires their coach.

I think Cleveland is a remote possiblity, but the best possibility for Pitino finding a sucker. The Cavs are going to be looking for a college-style coach to develop talent. Gilbert was hellbent on getting Tom Izzo to be his coach at one point, so this notion of hiring a college coach is nothing new. And Gilbert, for all his expenditures on the arena and luxury tax and making a business of taking money from poor people through push button mortgages, casinos and buying a distressed asset known as the entire city of Detroit for pennies on the dollar, is strangely cheap when it comes to paying front office members (a trend I think will pick up speed now that he doesn't have LeBron breathing down his neck to pony up in order to keep him in Cleveland). He'd get Pitino at a bargain price.

I don't think it's going to happen, but I wouldn't be shocked if the Cavs did something this tremendously stupid.

Things can obviously change, especially where NBA money is concerned, but I thought Pitino had said he made peace with his NBA flameout and realized he was a much better college coach?

I think that was something Pitino said when he had a college job. Unemployment can lead one to considering a broader range of employment options.

He poked around the URI job after Dan Hurley went to UConn. Got nowhere.
