Smasher, weren't some of those picks based on signability? I remember BJ Upton was the consensus number one, but some of those other guys you mentioned were taken in the back half of the first round. And it's not like JVB was considered a huge reach with that pick either.

But Ordonez didn't have that big a year for the Tigers last year. He was fourth on his own team in HRs and a deserved 22nd in MVP voting. Jason Bay had a more productive year for the Pirates than Ordonez did for the Tigers. Bay made $1 million and Ordonez made $15 million.

Ordonez had the kind of good solid year that Jeff Conine used to have in his prime. Useful, certainly, but not worth $15 million.

Ordonez has obviously been much better this season, but I look at his three years and can't consider that money well spent by the Tigers by any stretch.

Matt Morris' acquisition is another example of the Pirates' piss-poor judgment in personnel matters. The Giants practically had a party when they unloaded that contract, and the team that took it could afford it less than the Giants could.

I'm not really seeing that. Bullington got $4 million, Upton got $4.6. Fielder got $2.4.

Van Benschoten got $2.4 million, Lowry got $1 million, Wright got $960K.

Bradley got $2.2 million, Zito got $1.59, Sheets got $2.45.

Most teams liked Van Benschoten as a first baseman, not a pitcher.

Well, if it wasn't an issue before, "signability" will probably become an issue now that the Pirates have hired MLB's slot enforcer to run the organization:

Not good news. Should the Bucs ever have another winning season, it would happen by fluke, not because there was some grand scheme to rebuild the franchise that was working.

I thought maybe this thread title was an indication he'd done such a crap job the Pirates felt the need to fire him twice.

  7. Rumor has it, Ruben Amaro Jr (Phillies Ast GM) is the lead candidate to take over the GM duties in Pittsburgh.

Most of the coaches in Pittsburgh expect to be cut loose after the final game of the season.

So, you're saying he's the perfect candidate to be an MLB GM?
